Here’s my tutorial on this great two bar linear beat used in the M.I.A. song “Paper Planes!” Love this song and I have so much fun playing it as a linear groove. Linear drumming is when no two limbs overlap on top of each other, and never causes a compound note. By not playing two notes at the same time it causes the beat to flow in a unique way. This technique is used often in Fusion music. Players such as; Steve Gadd, Terry Bozzio and Dennis Chambers are just a few of the many top notch drummers who demonstrated this technique in well known songs.
Enjoy “Paper Planes!”
This was always such a silly song with a killer beat! Ironic that the cheesy songs always have cool beats. Anyway, here’s “Hott In Herre” by Nelly. The video breaks down all limbs.
Notice at the end of the video I’m adding some embellishments; 5 strokes on hi-hat, 6 stroke rolls around the toms, and 3:4 pattern using 5 stroke rolls on hi-hat and snare(Garibaldi lick).
