My only wish for today’s drummers is that the know of the works of this drummer, Zigaboo “Ziggy” Modeliste. He is one of the founding members of ultra funk and New Orleans hybrid band, The Meters. Even if you don’t know him by name, you know him by his beats and fills because he’s been sample dozens of hip-hop artist/producers such as; Queen Latifah, Run DMC, NWA, Ice Cube, Salt-N-Pepa, Cypress Hill, EPMD, Public Enemy, Digable Planets, A Tribe Called Quest, Beastie Boys, Naughty by Nature, and Public Enemy. Below is two examples why this man is the Dean Of Groove!
First is some of his work with The Meters with the famous instrumental, “Cissy Strut.”
Second is this fantastic collaboration of Mark Ronson, Erykah Badu, members of the Dap Kings and Ziggy. This just makes me smile because of the use of just the right grooves!
